Friday, June 14th, was a stiflingly hot day, but that did not stop ACE from teaming up with The Horticultural Society, the New Harlem East Merchants Association (NHEMA), and a dedicated group of corporate volunteers to dig up some dirt and plant an array of colorful flowers along East 125th Street. Long buried cinder blocks were removed from the tree beds between Lexington and Madison, and in their place our team of ACE participants and volunteers left clusters of red and white begonias.
Many of the ACE’s program participants have called Harlem home at some point in their lives, and when the work was finished they voiced their pride for spending an afternoon giving a little extra back to their community. We offer a big thank you to our volunteers and participants for getting their hands dirty! And to The Hort, whose partnership with ACE is providing our participants with valuable training and skills that increase their employability. Last, and far from least, thank you NHEMA for giving our participants valuable opportunities to demonstrate their new talents and beautify our city streets.
